Some interesting ways how our hindi film lyricists have continued "guftagoo" with other/previous songs. Today, let's look at Anand Bakshi sahab. The film BOBBY propelled a young Rishi Kapoor to overnight stardom. And the song "Main Shayar To Nahi" was a huge hit. (1/9)
Almost everyone knows the mukhda of that song: "main shayar to nahi, magar ae haseen, jab se dekha maine tujh ko mujh ko shayari aa gayi..." That was 1973.

Now, fast forward 7 years. Rishi Kapoor is a bona fide star and heartthrob at this point. The year is 1980. The film is Karz. The same players reassemble. Music is once again by Laxmikant Pyarelal and lyrics once again by Anand Bakshi. Here lies the genius of Bakshi sahab.

He uses the star currency of Rishi Kapoor to do a throwback to Bobby, the film that made him into a star 7 years later in Karz. The song? Dard-e-dil. Mukhda hai: "dard-e-dil, dard-e-jigar, dil mein jagaaya aapne... Pehle to main shayar tha, aashiq banaaya aapne!"

This is such a clever throwback, because not only do you subconsciously remember "main shayar to nahi" from 7 years ago, both these songs also get inexplicably tied to the legacy of Rishi Kapoor, such that you think of Rishi Kapoor, and you think of both these songs.

There's also a subtle nod to the shayari tradition in both these mukhdas, albeit 7 years apart. What are these mukhdas implying? That youthful love/first love was the catalyst in making me a poet ("main shayar to nahi"), to jawaani ke ishq ne mujhe shayar banaaya.

But becoming an aashiq requires more than just youthful, exuberant love. Hence, 7 years apart, now you have the lines - "pehle to main shayar tha, aashiq banaaya aapne". In Urdu shayari tradition, aap aise hi aashiq nahi bante. It takes time and is born out of experience.

So, if you look at these 2 songs 7 years apart from a poetic lens, you can see what layers Bakshi sahab is operating at. Ke us jawaani ke shayar ko aashiq banne mein waqt laga. He "matured" into becoming an aashiq. Ye ek progression hai. This is a nod to Urdu shayari.

Of course, you can still enjoy these 2 songs as out and out Rishi Kapoor bangers. But the subtle meanings implied in these songs give them a fresh perspective. And I tip my hat to Bakshi sahab for his genius 🥰
