Mixed messages from our govt on gas. Companies here, Todd Energy and Greymouth Petroleum, are ramping up gas exploration and extraction here in Tikorangi in another major boom time. They clearly see ongoing profit in gas.
Todd Energy are applying for consents to up Mangahewa C and D sites from existing 8 wells to 20 wells. C site is literally on the farm across the road from us. We follow it closely.
Greymouth are in the process of setting up a very large seismic survey covering much of the northern area here, including coastal areas. Neither company would be planning these expansions if they didn't see an ongoing future for gas in this country.
My reading is that the govt has tacitly accepted gas as a *transition energy* as opposed to the fossil fuel it is and that they have bought the dream of *green hydrogen*. Trouble is that gas is the transition to green hydrogen and they may never get past that gas input.
So yeah, I am deeply suspicious of this govt's position on gas. Big difference between the rhetoric and what we see on the ground here.
