BREAKING: On Feb. 9, the Board of Education will vote on permanently removing Lowell’s selective admissions process beyond the 2021-22 school year. This proposal, created in response to the systemic racism at Lowell, will be introduced on Feb. 2. (1/5) #lowellhighschool #SFUSD
According to the proposal, Lowell’s low enrollment of Black, Latinx, and Samoan Pacific Islander students does not reflect the district’s demographics and “perpetuates segregation and exclusion.” It also calls into question the legality of Lowell’s selective admissions. (2/5)
If the proposal passes, a Community Coalition will be created to evaluate the progress made on implementing the demands Lowell’s BSU made during their 2016 walkout and the current state of equity at Lowell. (3/5)
The Coalition would eventually direct their attention to the district as a whole and make recommendations to the BOE about how to improve anti-racist education, as well as LGBTQ harassment, sexual harassment, and Title IX education. (4/5)
