New CCES policy opinion dataset ( https://dataverse.harvard.edu/dataset.xhtml?persistentId=doi:10.7910/DVN/OSXDQO) makes it easy to check public opinion change over time--only a handful of items asked regularly, but wanted to check whether views on key issues changed much before -> during Trump era (eg is there thermostatic change?).
Some sign of pro-environmental shift but seems like already moving in liberal direction from 2014 to 2015 (before Trump's pres). Views on gun rights hold steady though Reps/Indies move more conservative as of late. ACA support among Dems/Indies jumps once it's threatened in 2017.
On border security, general move away from Trump's position, but larger among Ds (eg 10 pts from 2016-17 vs. 3 among Rs and 7 among Is) -> more of a partisan dynamic (reaction to outgroup leader) than broader public moving in parallel away from current president's policy goals.
Not sure what's happening in more recent years where everyone moves right though. For views toward existing undocumented pop, there's a familiar pattern ( https://twitter.com/A_agadjanian/status/1278543174583988226): liberalizing shift was underway before Trump era (though no strong partisan hue to the change).
