A poor widowed brahmin woman lived with her small son in the kingdom of Harishchandra. She was an ardent devotee of Ganesh.
Once, a renowned potter was asked to make some pots for a royal function. He tried and tried but every time, his pots remained half-baked.

Then someone told him to sacrifice a young boy.
One night, he found a small boy playing alone. This was the same woman’s son. He lifted her and put him in the kiln/oven in which he baked his pots.
The next day, when he opened the kiln, he saw the kiln full of water.
Doorva grass was growing nearby and lotus were floating in it. The child came out harmless. When the King heard the news, he was amazed.
The child’s mother was searched for n presented before the King.
She revealed that she observed Sakat Vrat religiously and prayed to Ganesha.
That day onwards, people started observing this vrat with devotion.

It is believed that Ganesh bestows his presence on earth during this day imparting devotees with wisdom, prosperity and good fortune.
