I'm a huge sucker for "small multiple" charts and NBA teams make a great subject for them because you can make a tidy grid with 5 rows and 6 columns. Here's a thread of some of my favorite 30-team small multiples, starting with one of my own that shows 20 years of franchise wins:
In my opinion, @owenlhjphillips has the prettiest 30-team small multiples around. He has a great eye for scale and color which makes his charts instantly fun! He has done several great shot chart versions and I found another that looked at fan engagement on Reddit:
I love the detail on this small multiple from @adamrpearce! The pixels really add a neat feel to his charts of minute-by-minute point differentials:
Analyst @EdKupfer is a prolific small multiplier with a ton of examples to choose from. He has his own version of the minute-by-minute point differentials plus a new twist that breaks it down by opponent quality. He's also looked at schedule strength and, recently, team ratings:
I got inspired to do this thread after looking at a great small multiple chart from @inpredict yesterday. Mike's charts offer some new perspectives on the "what" and "when" of winning basketball games.
Here are a pair of 30-team small multiples created by my guy @BoSchwartz that examined the relationship between a team's 3-point volume and the consistency of its offensive rating. Is it really "live by the 3 die by the 3"? I don't know, but hose little histograms are very clean!
Among the approximately 40 bajillion tools and features at http://PBPstats.com  you will find these two small multiple charts from @bballport which show the typical possession length for each team and the possession breakdown by no. of starters on the floor:
Another visual style that I really admire is @presidual - these small multiples showing rolling team ratings and distributions of player ages are extremely well organized:
Here's another look at player ages and team ratings -- this time combined into one chart! @tvbassine just shared this example of NBA small multiples earlier today:
I really got a kick out of these weird Chernoff faces from @AcrossTheCourt - they were so wacky and unique! Each feature of the cartoons describes an attribute -- pace, defensive rating, assist rate, etc -- of an NBA team:
OK, I'm cheating a little on this last one -- because these are players and not teams -- but these 3-D shot charts from @flowingdata are to fantastic to leave out. A different sort of small multiple!
Those are all the examples I could dig up. Please share any other good ones that I left out!!
