I discovered this photo on facebook of my uncle in the 80s. Watching ‘It’s A Sin’ and realising just how awful a time it was for gay men back then, and adding my family’s strict Jamaican heritage, it’s honestly inspiring - his bravery, his confidence. What a fucking icon, truly.
He’s been in Brighton all my life and I’ve only met him once aged like 10 and I totally understand why he had to distance himself from the family but I just wish I’d reached out to him when I was younger. So naïve of me to think he wouldn’t understand when he helped pave the way.
He was so supportive from afar when I came out and has been so full of love even for those who don’t understand him. I understand him now and he’s a bit of a hero. I owe it to him to be the best version of me that I can. Visiting him is a priority for me after lockdown!
So I got in touch and told him the Internet thinks he’s fab. And if this response isn’t enough proof... 😭🥺💖
