#WCLC20 We've seen drug approvals for lung cancer explode. But inclusion criteria have become more complex which has led to increasingly homogeneous trial participants. This is not progress; it limits generalization of trial results. Broaden criteria and boost accrual! #LCSM

#WCLC20 But expanding criteria only helps a fraction of our patients. The greatest barrier remains health disparities. We have to systematically address age-ism (median age in trials well below median age of disease) and income disparities as barriers to trial involvement.

#WCLC20 The racial disparities in trial participants starts a cycle - less participation means the results reflect an increasingly homogeneous population. As our treatments become more selective and sophisticated, this will limit the applicability of the findings even more. #LCSM

#WCLC20 To minimize disparities, we need to become familiar with the differences between equality, equity, and justice. We should aim for justice. #LCSM

#WCLC20 Recent legislature to ensure coverage for trial participation will help. As will training and education. As @jillfeldman4 puts it, the @IASLC #STARS Patient Research Advocate (PRA) program helps inform us on the "science and realities of lung cancer research" #LCSM
