THREAD: A Coastway Will guide to @SouthernRailUK's Class 171 "Turbostar" fleet
Let's start with a little bit of History (yay)

With the Classes of 205 and 207 life expired, Govia ordered a fleet of 15 Class 171 units which would run on the 2 unelectrified lines on thier network. These being...
》The Uckfield Line
》Hastings to Ashford "Marshlink" line
The fleet first entered service in 2003 and in the last few years, have been joined by more Turbostars
》South West Trains 170392 joined and became 171730
》Scotrail sets 170421-424 joined Southern as 171201-202 and 171401-402 after reformation in 2015
A tip for recognizing the different sub classes - 171/7s and /8a have a combined marker and tail lights whilst Ex-Scotrail 171/2s and /4s have separate marker and tail lights

Additionally, 171/7s and /8s include side information panels which are very handy!
Despite having a different classification to the 170s, the only difference between 171s and 170s is the coupler

》171s (above) use Scharfenberg automatic couplers
》170s (below) use BSI automatic couplers

171s have these couplers encase they need to rescue a failed 377
Class 171s have standard and 1st class seating. 1st is located behind driving cabs and is declassified on Marshlink services

》 2 Car 171/2s and /7s have 107 Std seats and 9 1st seats
》4 Car 171/4s and/8s have 241 Std seats and 18 1st seats
The fleet is allocated to Selhurst depot in South London and is where all heavy maintenance is carried out

Marshlink units can't return to Selhurst ever night. In this case, they're serviced and refueled at St Leonard's Engineering Ltd. Here they can undergo Class A exams too
The future of the Class 171s is uncertain. The /2s, /4s and /7s should have been going to EMR next year but a lack of suitable replacement means this plan is on hold

So for now, enjoy your Turbostars on the Marshlink and Uckfield lines
