Protestors who were arrested had stories about being interrogated by FBI agents looking for their "antifa connections." Some of these FBI agents seemed to be going through the motions. Some were. They'd been ordered to find antifa supersoldiers they knew were never real.
The antifa scare tactics used by the Trumpists came mainly from white supremacists. Milkshake victim and far-right collaborator Andy Ngo has been the GOP's main disseminator of "scary antifa" misinfo/disinfo. Ted Cruz uses Ngo to spread the lies in Congress. Ngo recently fled the country, claiming (without evidence) that antifa was coming to get him.
There's a lot to dig into in the NYT story. But one notable detail is the attempt by the Trump admin and fake DHS goon Chad Wolf to turn the killing of a federal officer by a far-right boogaloo boi into an antifa attack. This was just brazen fascist disinformation.

Far-right extremists had a direct line to the Trump admin. White nationalists working in the Trump admin. The Trump administration put American lives at risk to spread dangerous lies. Jan. 6 is partly the result of that.
