It’s not just farmers - the broader revolt against Modi’s fascist regime is enormous and everyone is so blinkered here by Joe Biden promising to be a bit nicer that we are missing one of the largest socialist, anti-fascist, mobilizations of our time. https://twitter.com/joshuapotash/status/1354131306158968832
Note carefully that Modi and his followers have been framing the ongoing protests as “not really farmers, just troublemakers trying to destroy India.” That should remind us of last summers BLM marches during which we often heard that “these are mostly white antifa agitators.”
Note also that the core of the struggle: Punjabi farmers are trying to protect their access to land against Modi’s efforts to have is transferred to large agribusinesses. Commodification and capitalization of land, the most fundamental element of capitalism.
Liberals will try to make this about “human rights,” nationalists will try to frame it around Khalistani pride, but at its core this is about people wanting to live with independence and dignity, knowing that Modi’s capitalist reforms will take that possibility away.
My long-winded point: we must support this massive mobilization against Modi, and we must do so knowing that it is implicitly (and often explicitly) an anti-capitalist struggle. (With all due disrespect to the CUPE acct that blurred the hammer-and-sickle logos from these flags).
