A note on writing advice: It was around 10 to 15 years ago that everyone recommended writers establish a "brand." Some embraced this. Some ridiculed it. But it was a common strategy to write several books in the same vein before you even thought about doing something else. /1
Now, it's common to see people write in multiple categories: PBs, MG, YA—not to mention fiction and nonfiction. Kate Messner is a great example. Christina Soontornvat just got Newbery Honors for two books, one fiction and one non. /2
The better advice, I think, is to do work that matters deeply enough to you. If you really care, you will do what it takes to master the material and the form.
Most people won't be able to do with Kate and Christina do, but everyone has something they care about fiercely. /3

Don't chase trends. Don't take advice that treats you like a robot. Read widely and dig deep, both into yourself and into the wonders of the world.
I think that's what gives you the best chance of success.
