Justice Dep. officials began shifting federal prosecutors and F.B.I. agents from investigations into violent white supremacists to focus on cases involving rioters or anarchists, including Antifa. One prosecutor went to the IG with concerns about the excessive focus on Antifa
Fed. prosecutors & agents felt pressure to uncover a left-wing extremist plot that never materialized. Meanwhile, the F.B.I., in particular, had increasingly expressed concern about the threat from white supremacists.
Requests for funding to bolster the # of analysts who search internetposts for warnings of violent extremism were denied by DHS officials, limiting the department’s ability to spot developing threats like the post-Election Day anger, acc. to correspondence and officials.
Chad Wolf, former acting homeland security secretary, denied that the administration’s response to the violence at racial justice protests came at the cost of efforts to combat far-right violence.
Wolf: "You could argue the reserve. The fact we were focused on white supremacist extremists in late 2019, early ’20, we missed the antifa stuff coming up. One could always go back and say, ‘You focused on this at the expense of that.’
NSC staff, including Andrew Veprek, an ally of Stephen miller, asked DHS officials for evidence to justify designating Antifa a domestic terrorist organization. They sought information about possible ties between antifa and foreign entities.
The # of warnings about all types of extremists in the second half of last year eventually dwindled. No bulletin was issued about potential violence on Jan. 6. One assessment dated Dec. 30 did warn of the potential for white supremacists to carry out “mass casualty” attacks
