Born Scott Mescudi, the Cleveland native is responsible for a key shift in hip-hop. He broke new ground by combining alternative and electronic music within hip-hop. All the while he remained fearless in his expression, no matter how dark or light his lyrics were.
“When I first heard Cudi, his voice, his melody, his subject matter, and the combination of him putting the melody with the rap in a way that I hadn’t really heard since Bone Thugs felt really new. When I heard his mixtape, I said I wanted to write with him.” - Kanye West (2008)
Leading to the creation of Kanye West’ fourth studio album “808’s & Heartbreak” that both Kanye and Cudi co-wrote and produced. This album would have influence and impact on an entire generation like no other. Notable names including Travis Scott and Drake.
“Soundtrack 2 My Life” was one of the stand-out tracks from Cudi’s 2009 breakout debut, Man on the Moon. In the song, he speaks strongly on his feeling of isolation. This relatability captivated the youth at the time when mental health was not a topic of discussion within hip-hop
In the next 10 years or so, Cudi would release seven albums, completing the Man on the Moon trilogy, and even having a collaborative project with none other than Kanye West himself. Having his own personal demons, Cudi was still able to be largely successful and stay relevant.
Cudi was unapologetically different. He accepted his role as a black sheep and never cared to fit in with the conventional. By standing alone, he was able to stand out. He became the voice for all the other loners and stoners who didn’t feel represented in hip-hop. An icon.
