Super Bowl previews are all over the place. I thought I would do something a little different. I re-watched SB XLII. How did then NYG DC/current Chiefs DC Steve Spagnuolo make Tom Brady uncomfortable? What did the plan that held NE to 14 points look like? Thread
Coverage disguise, specifically show 1 high and pop the top to 2 high was a reoccurring game plan element. Often the concept forced underneath throws as it did here.
As the game progressed the offense plan attempted to capitalize on similar concepts to take the easy underneath throw. The defense adjusted using 2man coverages to present the same disguise while also challenging the underneath throws.
Some coverage disguises from Dime personnel got exotic. Here the Corner shows pressure, ultimately playing coverage. Dime pops from in the box to deep coverage to provide help to Safety replacing the Corner on the X. Again coverage presents as 1 high, post snap becomes 2 high.
The pressure plan also created issues. Here the mugged LB bluffed the drop out, reinserting for a quick pressure. The coverage was again present 1 high popping the top to 2 high.
More disguised 2 high pressure. This time the mugged LB does drop out. The Nic/Dime pressure overloads the RB while the coverage denies the shot opportunity.
The mugged LB also showed and pressured. Here as part of the classic interior crossfire pattern. More 2 high pressure coverage backstopping the 5 man pressure.
Curious to see what if any off these game plan elements show up in this years Super Bowl. Many of the structural and scheme components still exist within the Chiefs current defensive scheme.
