Finally making a thread on Seventeen’s vocals! I won’t go too deep into analysis since… I’m only A Student. But I wanted to share my knowledge on it! https://twitter.com/haosbuddy/status/1355434661246169091
First let’s familiarize ourselves with musical concepts! Some say there are 7 parameters of music and some say there are 8 but let’s focus on one that I’ve mentioned before: Color. It’s one of the elements of music among others like melody, harmony, rhythm, dynamics, etc.
So what is color in music? You know how when you play C in the piano and play the same note in the guitar, it sounds different? It’s the same pitch but they have different sound quality. I won’t go into the science of this but-
it just means different instruments produce a unique sound, that’s Tone Color, but most call it Timbre.

We usually use the terms bright or warm or rough when describing vocal color.
Seventeen all have different backgrounds and use different vocal techniques, so let’s analyze each member.
S.Coups and Vernon’s vocal colors are a bit similar to each other. They’re both used to rapping, but when singing their voices are so warm and their intonation is really good. The difference is how they enunciate their lyrics.
Cheol tends to draw out his vowels and connects his lyrics together while Vernon focuses more on his consonants. We can especially hear this technique when they’re rapping, so we can say they still use it when singing. (duh hahssjkah)
Jeonghan’s are light and breathy and he usually sings in the upper registers. But lately his voice has been so powerful?? Especially in 24H. I’m not sure if it’s because it’s in Japanese, but his voice really came out strong and controlled.
Joshua’s color is cool and boyish whenever I listen to his voice I feel like I’m receiving the love I deserve?? He sings as if he’s confessing his love to you thru song and I love it so much
Jun’s!! He was taught bel canto technique in hs (oomf did a whole thread abt this and I agree wholeheartedly so here) https://twitter.com/huihius/status/1342837805018304514?s=21
He improved so much!! 🥺 Stream Dream!!!
As for hoshi, you can distinctly know it’s him singing when you hear his nasally chest voice. The way he opens up his voice sounds SO good especially when belting with an “ah” vowel. And the way he switched to falsetto?? Perfect.
Wonwoo’s singing voice is so… warm. And soothing. You can feel the soft vibrations when he goes in the lower registers and you can actually HEAR him smiling since he doesn’t really open his mouth when he goes higher. (Which is usual for someone who usually sings lower)
NOW HIM idk how he does it I need to Learn his Technique it’s so good it’s controlled it’s piercing it’s HEARTBREAKING the way he sings is always SO FULL of emotions and the way he shifts through his chest voice to falsetto to head voice hE’S AMAZING I LOVE HIM SO MUCH FUCK
The way I can explain hao’s voice is that it’s like a warm cup of tea? You know when it’s been a cold day and your body’s trying to warm up and when you take that first sip of hot tea you immediately feel it in your entire body… that’s how I feel when I hear his voice.
He sings in a high tone but it’s so soft that it’s not irritating to listen to because… idk how else to say it it’s beautiful. His intonation is always on point too like remember that ofd ep where he sang his lines in Pretty U? On pitch. Stream
Mingyu’s singing voice has that raspy sound to it. You can specially hear it in Trauma since he was the main vocal there. His intonation is so good too he can hit those notes with ease and his voice wouldn’t break.
A more recent example of vocal king kim mingyu
HE here’s another one I Need to Know your Technique the way his voice is so powerful and clear and the way he shifts from his chest to head voice uGH like there’s no strain??? He makes it looks so easy when it’s not i want to Learn ( stream it)
His lower registers sound good now too compared to when they were rookies?? It sounds so stable and whole it doesn’t sound forced. Stream his cover of The Road! You can actually FEEL what he’s trying to convey in this song.
Seungkwan’s voice when with dk’s blends SO well because if dk has a high tone in his voice, Seungkwan’s at the lower one. He uses more of his chest voice so it sounds deeper and we get This.
Seungkwan OST King.
The way he belts is SO mind-blowing too idk how he does it but when he’s just suddenly. Up There. Without preparation. AT 18. It’s amazing.
Dino. Dino my boy. Dino with perfect pitch. His intonation is SO good that even away from a professional setting he still sounds SO good. His voice sounds boyish too but more on the playful side compared to Joshua’s.
LOOK. LISTEN. His voice adapts so easily that he can do corrections in one (1) take. (Stream )
I made this because I want to emphasize how Seventeen is not only a dance group! The group is filled with a diverse variety of voices that blends so well when together. Different people produce different sounds, and it’s not a bad thing!
Just because two people don’t sound like each other doesn’t mean one of them is a bad singer. They just have different vocal color ☺️

Seventeen CAN sing and they ARE GREAT singers. Thank you.
Nooo i forgot to add 🧍‍♂️ Seungkwan power belter. Dokyeom vibrato king. Thanks
