Have to lease by example. As a BN and BDE CSM, I personally rated 3-5 NCOs....normal span of control for a “first line leader.” Daily touch points, and monthly. Quarterly was deliberate...1-2 hours sometimes. Rated NCO led the discussion. I wasn’t this good as a SL/PSG. Why? https://twitter.com/SW_usawtfm/status/1355544919465713664
1. I didn’t work hard enough to protect time. Daunting yes, impossible no.
2. I didn’t see the risk of not doing this with 100% effort. I had great Soldiers/NCOs, and I lost focus on the “10% that takes 90% of your time.” False, btw. I just lacked prioritization.
I realized the error of my ways when I was a 1SG. And counseled every SSG and SGT in primary zone. Not once a quarter, but close. I felt if the Bn CDR can do quarterly counseling with all PLs, and the BDE CDR did with all CO CDRs, I need to stop making excuses.
So, set the example. And help clear the obstacles for SGT/SSG/SFC to get after this. Not once a month on “pay day activities” but when they want to schedule it. Let SLs/PSGs own the training calendar. Because it’s the “Training and Leader Development Calendar”. -(NCOER bullet)
