Some audition thoughts for actors... I’ve done a lot of casting over zoom this last year & think it’s a good idea if you can ready your set up for a wide take as well as close up. ie have your laptop set up on a table for initial close up chat and read... 1/7 #audition #actors
And have another ‘set up’ ready so you can later move your laptop up to a shelf that’s higher, so you can step back & do a wide take (say down to thighs at least, or wider) if requested. It can be useful, to see how the character moves in your hands. 2/7
At an in-person audition, we’d at the very least see how you move as you enter and exit the room, pick up your script, say hi.. anything... but a zoom gives us no idea of your physical presence... unless there’s time for a wide shot too. 3/7
Generally speaking, there’s a lot I’m liking about zoom castings. Not least that it’s more egalitarian in many ways. Entirely removing traveling to auditions stops it being London-centric and prevents cost or other commitments being a barrier. 4/7
There’s also something rather lovely about us being in our own homes, on both sides of the lens: in fact I’ve spent much of this pandemic at my parents’ house, caring for them. So it’s likely I’ll be sat in their spare bedroom. No intimidating premises. Just real life. 5/7
And it really doesn’t matter if the door knocks, or if you suddenly have to attend to your child because he/she needs you, or any such things. I want to meet you, and not just be presented with a notion of you, so what better way to do so. 6/7
So I certainly intend to continue to offer remote auditions for actors who’d prefer them, after all of this. It seems to me there’s no longer any reason not to. And hopefully that widens the reach. 7/7 #auditions #remotecasting #actors
