In retrospect, the Rockies’ handling of Arenado is a masterclass in organizational failure.

*Develop a generational talent.

*Make him the face of your franchise.

*Sign him to a big contract with a promise to build a winning team around him.
*Less than a year later, alienate him and do not make an attempt to repair the relationship.

*Create a PR disaster around the disagreement, and allow the situation to fester.
*Then use him in a salary dump that 1. alienates die-hard fans and decimates an already exhausted fan base.

2. Is so bad in terms of the return that it enrages the “trade-Arenado-and-restock-the-farm fans.”
3. Forces the team to throw in $50 million TO SALARY DUMP A GENERATIONAL TALENT after crying to fans about how bad the money in MLB is right now.

*Handle the PR for this in a way that’ll make you the subject of textbook chapter for ways to not handle a media relations disaster.
When you get over feeling the heartbreak and rage and are able to step back, you really have to admire the ineptitude with which the Rockies handled this.

Years in the making. Took real skill — brain surgeon stuff.
