Students are deciding on grad schools at this time of year! That's great! Please ask the following of programs and potential advisors (and their current or former students):
What do they view the advisors' role as being? Do they involve students in research? *how*? are they coauthors?
What do they do to help their students get jobs? Do they expect all their students to get academic jobs, or are they open to other types of employment? What have their students gone on to do?
What sorts of feedback to they provide on students' work? How long does it take them? What are their expectations about contributions to the intellectual life of the department/lab/research group?
Are their students happy? (They should know the answer to this question!)
