"Gee, Nate, you sure seem cynical about higher education these days! Why so bitter and angry?" https://montreal.ctvnews.ca/virtually-normal-montreal-student-tries-to-contact-his-online-prof-only-to-learn-he-s-dead-1.5288640
1. University faculty are treated as utterly disposable commodities these days.
2. University administrations give not one shit about the quality of their students' education
3. The entire field has been reoriented to extract value from students.
4. Institutionalized intellectual and creative activity is largely dead. Universities have privatized what little research they now produce: the result is a dangerously anemic intellectual society.
5. They would rather exploit a corpse rather than hire a new professor.
5.And what's even more fun: our culture seems pretty comfortable with the utter breakdown of a once robust intellectual culture.
You 'believe' in science?
Agitate for funding them in a broad level again.

6. You think the humanities are important?
Support art, history, philosophy, and language professors make a decent wage. Otherwise you're just flapping your gums.

7. Forgive student debt. It's a dumb way to finance education, it's ripped North American university infrastructure down the middle.
I'll say it again: funding education through student loans is just a mind-numbingly stupid thing to do.

8. The current CEO wanna be culture of university administrations needs to go. They run universities into the ground to extract value. They're educational corporate raiders.
They need to be fired, ranks shrunk, replaced by people who believe in education.

9. I'd like someone to please tell me how to get our broader culture to care about this. I've been writing about it for years, so have other people. The astonishing apathy from the broader culture never ceases to amaze.
10. These policies make your child's education more expensive.
11. These policies combine with the systemic sexism and misogyny in the university to make university workplaces sexually hostile for female and LGTBQ+ faculty
12. These policies combine with the systemic racism in the university to drive people of colour out of the university.
13. These policies combine with deeply embedded classism in our universities, ensuring that rural perspectives, first generation PhD perspectives, are routinely buried.
14. The North American university system is one of the ways in which our culture funnels resources from the 99% to the 1%. It's basically a wealth-reallocation program at this point that funnels money and intellectual resources upwards.
