Recruiting strategies are kinda weird to me because as a 1st gen when I was interviewing, I didn’t actually like it when people would be like “oh come here we’re so great, look at why we’re so great”...
I’d honestly rather hear what you don’t like and then I can decide if those are things that I’m willing to work with the institution (if they have a history of listening to petitions/complaints) to change once I’m there or put up with for ~6yrs...
Idk I just feel like not hearing this honest info gives you almost no ownership of your decision of what or where you’re getting yourself into for like more than half a decade. And even when recruits do ask candid Qs, people don’t always answer wholeheartedly...
Anyways this was all in reflection as I’m participating in a recruitment thing today and yes I’ll always speak to the many great things I’ve been able to accomplish because I’m at UCSF and the amazing community I’ve had the privilege to find here...
But I want to make sure that I’m giving info that allows these recruits to find the place that is going to make them feel the way I do about where I ended up, bc as much as I criticize lol I do enjoy UCSF a lot, I criticize bc I know it can be a place we can be even more proud of
So in summary: what I’m trying to say is come here if you like what you hear, if there’s red flags to you, maybe listen to your gut, I’ve listened to mine and have ended up not just at a great university, but a good program, and an amazing lab 🙂🙌🏼
