A big reason "normal" people hate politics is the maddening helplessness when smart people shoot down a proposed reform but don't actually have any good ideas to address the core problem

I find myself frequently saying "Give me some alternative b/c the status quo won't hold"
This applies to a TON of positions:

Healthcare is too complex and expensive. We need a reform that limits hospital costs.

"well you can't do that b/c here are all these unintended consequences"

OK. Give me some alternative b/c the status quo won't hold.
The situation with tech & privacy & censorship & free speech is spiraling out of control. We need *some* kind of regulation that pumps the breaks.

"Well, your idea is totally unworkable b/c of these technical reasons"

OK. Give me some alternative b/c the status quo won't hold.
Cancel culture is creating a fragile discourse & ruining lives. We need the someone to put a stop to this or at least slow it down.

"That idea is dumb, there are all these other implications to your proposal"

OK. Give me some alternative b/c the status quo won't hold.
I hate discussing policy. I hate it.

I end up begging for even the tiniest compromise, some sort of discussion about what to do and how to move forward.

But it's all just people with good vocabularies dithering about the problem, poking holes in any proposed solution.
There is some wisdom in highlighting the folly of "We need to do something. This is something. Therefore we need to do it."

Just b/c that first something isn't a good idea does not change the fact that WE NEED TO DO SOMETHING!
