About to listen to this presentation
The first time Dr Syed studied a brain was when a seven year older girl died in A&E and parents wanted to find out what had happened.
What is mindfulness?
Mental health is now being referred to as brain health.
No one size.
Conscious brain scans 42 frames. The unconscious brain scans 1.2 million frames
Judgement is the most essential important faculty of our mind.
The brain reacts to stimuli
Fear and anxiety.
In the early days of COVID there was anxiety and now that we know more about it we experience fear.
We can’t survive without fear.
Three main players of our alarm system.
Neurotransmitter systems thst regulate our behaviour
If this cycle continues we suffer anxiety, depression.
Three part model of anxiety.
Fear is universal. Amygdala releases hormone but is immune from the hormone itself.
Mice conditioned to fear cherry blossom scent will have offspring who will also experience fear. Same true in humans too (note this is an old study which probably couldn’t be conducted now).
Persistent depression
Impact of long-term stress on a child’s brain.
Depression a liar?
Then came Corona.
Immune system of bats is highly effective which made Corona mutate quickly. Bats raise body temperature while flying so Corona mutated to survive that which is why fever in patients isn’t effective in getting rid of Corona infection.
Lung anatomy and covid-19 target sites.
Normal vs covid lung
We are also seeing covid toe in patients.
Impact of covid on brain.
How might covid affect our mindfulness?
The actual number of patients is low but the effects are felt by many, many more because of anxiety
