Today marks 2-years since I’ve been an assistant professor. And here’s what I learned so far:
With God on my side, anything is possible. When I finally learned to accept me for me and my non-traditional approach to engineering, I performed better and was much happier. And the money, papers, and students started rolling in.
Enjoy the process. There’s so much beauty in watching @hobbs_lab, students and myself grow. I’ve learned to be more present and focus on building deep relationships before jumping into collaboration for the sake of trying to obtain tenure.
Build a tribe (virtually works too!). I have had ups and downs. I’ve learned that when I’m going down that roller coster, I can throw my hands up in the air, scream, and laugh with a close group of colleagues.
I’m a whole person. I have multiple identities. I love being a professor and I also love @thebiogals, sewing
, running
, cooking
, hiking
, etc. It’s important for me to continue to pour into these identities.

Mentorship is like dating. Take your time to find the right one and make sure it’s mutual. Again I value deep relationships. One of my mentors became my mentor by simply drawing me a map of how to get to the grocery store and brought me food when I was sick.
Learning never ends. I’m still growing, I’m still evolving, and it’s still exciting. And this is my favorite part.
