If I had time, I would have written a detailed rejoinder to this piece. I will, however, try to succinctly deal with your argument here. https://twitter.com/MichaelKugelman/status/1355366347396550659
Let's first establish one thing : no US citizen is justified in talking about the plight of the Uighurs, given that their own governments, across the political spectrum, have killed Muslims for fun.
At a state level, the USG has no moral standing in expressing love for the Uighurs ,given that it has embraced a butcher in Modi. Perhaps, Muslims of India or IIOJK are fake?
With the Uighurs ' issue already politicised and ensconced in the larger framework of the Sino-U.S. rivalry ,it is impossible for any independent thinker to separate facts from fiction.
As far as Pakistan's position re the matter is concerned, it is important that we dispassionately and carefully listen to what Imran Khan and his SA, whom you spoke to, have said. We cannot go public ,or make a mountain of a molehill, just because Uncle Sam says so.
Unlike the US, Pakistan respects the sensitivities of its allies, and hence takes up complicated subjects in ways that while helping resolve those are not detrimental to the overall health of a particular bilateral relation.
Now, only if the US was genuinely concerned about the Uighurs, we could have figured out a way of taking it into confidence before discussing things with the Chinese. We all know what is behind this love lost.
