There are some critical inflection points in the GOP that led to today but they def been like this going back to the 1980s, they just never said the quiet part out loud. There is a direct line from Reagan to Trump https://twitter.com/BoutrousTed/status/1355366523800576005
Reagan's campaign speech at Neshoba County, MS on "states rights" (where 3 civil rights workers were murdered in 1964).
His VP George HW Bush, using the Willie Horton ad, (the classic scary black man as criminal) to win his campaign against Dukakis

You also had the GOP marriage in the 1980s to the white led evangelical movement led by Jerry Falwell Sr (Moral Majority) and others that used abortion and gay rights as additional wedge issues politically.
1994 GOP House win? Newt Gingrich became Speaker. The guy you see today was who he was then.
He led an anti-taxation, anti-affirmative action, anti-welfare platform aka the "Contract with America"

2000s? Bush Jr. During his Presidential campaign he made a campaign speech at Bob Jones University in SC. A place well known at the time for banning interracial dating as a public stand.
His presidency? Three words: Hurricane Katrina response.
To say nothing else.

We're now at 2009 when the first Black President, Barack Obama became President and I think most people now agree the GOP leaders took the racist dog whistles to an air raid siren (eg. birtherism, Tea Party, is Obama a Muslim? etc)
