screaming lmao sensei talks at light speed but
Akutami-sensei read Bleach when they were in 4th grade! they've always been a fan of manga and got into drawing manga through his friendships with girls in school who also drew.

the first manga Akutami-sensei ever submitted to Jump was basically a joke/gag lmao they didn't think they'd ever get any feedback but the editor said they had potential and talent!
the host found Akutami-sensei's debut work in Jump and they just went "ah that's embarrassing"

absolutely lost it when Akutami-sensei was explaining why they chose their pen name lmfao if it wasn't going to be Akutami Gege, it was going to be Dokudami Milk lmfao that's like the opposite of what people usually go for sensei
Akutami-sensei: I like horror
also Akutami-sensei: I wasn't going to continue Jujutsu Kaisen after volume 0 and was going to draw idol manga
also Akutami-sensei: I wasn't going to continue Jujutsu Kaisen after volume 0 and was going to draw idol manga
Akutami-sensei says Yuuji is the type of young wakamono protagonist they don't handle well or know how to act around, which was done purposefully because they wanted Yuuji to be as different from sensei as possible.
we're slowly making our way through each volume of the manga, focusing on a specific character at once. I'm like counting down to Gojo and preparing for the hilarity already.
Megumi wasn't created to be a rival or opposing character to Yuuji. they're very good friends and classmates.
TIME FOR GOJO LMFAOOOOOOOOO
jk we went through iconic lines for each of the first years, and now we're going through the second years anD GETO
there was a bit earlier when Akutami-sensei talked about dark developments in stories being totally okay as long as they were interesting lmfao I can't get over how they talk about killing off characters in such a yasashii tone
Akutami-sensei: I like giving characters complex surnames
also Akutami-sensei: Geto's name came from the Geto Ski Resort in Iwate
also Akutami-sensei: Geto's name came from the Geto Ski Resort in Iwate
oh whoa, Nanami was originally conceived as an antagonist character. he was going to work for a shady company and then become a jujutsu user and ally in the story.
Akutami-sensei just revealed they've watched all the Human Centipede movies jfdsjafsdlf
Akutami-sensei is an Abarakidan fan lmfao wow what a heavy hint at their age
Akutami-sensei is a big fan of comedy shows lmao they also watch the M-1 Grand Prix every year. this explains a lot but also nothing at all about their personality and writing.
okay the interview is over!!!! will rewatch to catch other interesting things I missed but here are some random bits from my scribbled notes
Akutami-sensei on Gojo: he's too strong so his abilities are a hindrance to the story and plot development so he was sealed. his bandages in vol. 0 were changed to the blindfold out of consideration for the animators who'd have to animate Gojo
Nobara: there was no way to draw her or the other girls erotically or anything because sensei's parents would see!!! (lmao)
Akutami-sensei: yeah Yuuji's designed to be a young character I wouldn't get along with or be able to handle well
also Akutami-sensei: lmao I named him after one of my old classmates
also Akutami-sensei: lmao I named him after one of my old classmates
Akutami-sensei's reasoning behind the cyclops cat: "drawing one eye is easier and no one hates cats"
oh also the Akutami-sensei said the designs for Yuuji's uniform and clothes were inspired by Naruto. the wide collar and edgy sort of style is important
also a clarification on Gojo's bandages changing to a blindfold! it wasn't for the anime's sake sorry
Akutami-sensei changed it because drawing bandages every week for the manga serialization would've been too tedious, so blindfold Gojo came to be

Kobayashi-san (the host) said he speculated Akutami-sensei was a woman for the longest time because of the way they characterized females, particularly Nobara. her character was inspired by Hiromi in GO! Hiromi GO! manga that sensei read as a kid.
Akutami-sensei had plans for Yuuji to remain dead after Sukuna ripped his heart out if serialization for Jujutsu Kaisen didn't go well. since Yuuji was the type of character that sensei wouldn't get along with or handle well, sensei didn't seem to have any problems with this LOL
Akutami-sensei doesn't understand why Inumaki is super popular since they haven't really delved into his character much so they don't really agree with his popularity lmao
Akutami-sensei reminds themselves about the importance of visuals a lot because conveying expressions was one of the things they felt they were weakest at in the beginning.
random mentions of other manga during Akutami-sensei's interview:
- they like Mr. 3 from One Piece
- Megumi's design is like a typical rival (Sasuke) but that's it, he's more Yuuji's friend with similar ideals
- heavy BLEACH influence since sensei started reading in 4th grade
