Covid, the house fire analogy:

I’ve had a fire burning in my house since March and I’ve adopted a ‘living with fire approach’.

Each time the fire flares and threatens to engulf everything I stop everything I’m doing a battle the fire until it’s down to just a few embers. 1)
Then I begin to ignore it.

Funnily enough the last 2 times I’ve done this it hasn’t worked. In fact over Christmas the curtains caught, the living room was destroyed and my kid was in hospital with 50% burns and smoke inhalation. But I’m going to persist with the strategy. 2)
The ‘zero fire’ approach involves working harder to stamp the fire out altogether (full virus suppression, mandatory quarantine) and installing a fire alarm (fit for purpose public health infrastructure). I just don’t think that’s the right approach for my house. 3)
We can’t guarantee another fire won’t happen, but why not put out the one we have and and at least try to stop another?
