I'm just a Donegal girl,
Standing in front of Twitter,
Asking you to distill the heated #ZeroCovid debate into actual detail for people like me, living in Donegal 🧵 1/n
I worry that as much as we all love a good auld row, we are failing to act on things we can put in place. For example:
1. Resource public health.
2. Give them consultant status NOW!
3. Engage in meaningful dialogue and stop hurling from the ditches.
2/n
In order to have meaningful dialogue you need to listen. Context is important. The last 24 hrs have shown how an ill judged move can threaten what was so difficult to achieve for this island.
Those of us who live in Border counties live our lives as if there is no border.
3/n
We go to school, to work, to access healthcare on either side of this line on a map. But we also recognise that there are two different jurisdictions on either side. We also understand Brexit more than most. As such we seek details on the nuances of strategies.
4/n
We look for all of the scenarios we encounter in our daily lives to be mapped out in the context of any new approach. In looking for this we can be seen as being obstinate but to us the details matter.
I am not anti #ZeroCovid I just need to what it means for people like me.
5/n
In my previous job I crossed the border twice a day, every day. Sometimes an overnight stay to prevent me falling asleep at the wheel on my long commute. The road markings changed colour, the currency changed but not much else was noticeably different.
6/n
This was not something I thought was possible as a child growing up in the 80s/90s. The North was to be feared. Going to Dublin was an ordeal with border crossings.
Brexit threatened all of this. None of us want to have this pandemic go on any longer.
7/n
We feel the human cost. It is not new to us. We also feel the economic cost, perhaps more than most other counties. We want Covid to end, as quickly as possible. We just want a discussion on actual details of how to get there. Not a shouting match and media soundbites.
8/n
We are listening. Are you?
9/9.
