Have had people ask what writing instruction looks like at a lesson level so I've added templates to the blog ( https://mrvallanceteach.wordpress.com/resources/ ). I'll run through an e.g. based on the model kindly shared by Josie Sacks and inspired by
@TheWritingRevol. All templates follow this model (1)
INTRODUCTION OF GRAMMATICAL STRUCTURE. Introduce the structure deliberately. Use grammatical terminology, and be clear about how the structure can be used(2)
STRUCTURE IN PRACTICE. Give a clear (and simple) example. Use content from the lesson/ lesson sequence (the content drives the rigour!) (3)
INTRODUCE THE KEY RULE. Grammar is made up of rules. Be clear about what these are, and instruct your students deliberately (4)
PRACTICE THE RULE. Before practicing the structure, devise activities that practice the rule and familiarise students with the structure. Again, this should involve the content of the lesson (5)
PRACTICE THE STRUCTURE. Have students practice using the structure, first via turn and talk ('how would you complete this sentence') and then via independent practice (6)
PRACTICE THE STRUCTURE X2. Now have students write up their responses, before checking some examples underneath the visualiser and clarifying misconceptions (7)
EMBED AND APPLY. Give further examples and have students work with the given structure (END)
