A public order police commander attempted to disperse a crowd of people at Muizenberg Beach on Saturday morning during a protest against the COVID-19 lock down beach ban. He is confronted by protester Sven Jensen who asks him to define the word "Beach". @TimesLIVE
Beach goers streamed onto the beach ignoring the police. Some meditated and prayed, some went directly for the waves.
Samuel Sompeta said the lock down regulations were unjust and needed to be reviewed. He said the government was oppressing its people and curtailing their freedom of movement.
The police retreated after a while. It turns out attempting to enforce a regulation preventing people from accessing beaches is very difficult.
James Malan and Brent van der Westhuizen formed the group Ride to Freedom which clashed with police in front of Parliament last year. They are calling for the government restrictions to be ended completely.
