We looked at Icelandic whimbrels, which breed in Iceland but distribute from temperate to tropical areas during the wintering season. These areas are likely to differ in weather and food conditions. [2/5]

Two broad questions:
1. Is there a trade-off between migration distance & wintering energetic balance?
2. Are there carry-over effects from the wintering period into breeding phenology and investment?

Two short answers:
1. Yes, by migrating further individuals will likely winter where they can achieve a more positive energetic balance.
2. Apparently not, females wintering in different regions did not differ significantly in laying dates nor size of eggs laid.
