When you’re mixing down a song it’s easy to get carried away with all types of processing... More than anything you just want to play with filling up space. You’ve got stereo field vs mono. You’ve got “distance” (reverb) vs up-close (dry). Play with contrasts.
I think the most important part of mix is still simply just playing with levels, EQ helps you sculpt shit top-to-bottom and remove things that are competing. And more than anything find a groove. Make a few bold choices for character.
If you’re using drums from sample kits and modern synth VST’s you don’t need to compress any of that. It’s already all very punchy.

If you’re going crazy with 8 efx on 1 sound, take them all off and try again super fast, off instinct. The best mixes are off instinct.
