How Kid Cudi Changed Hip Hop Forever

Happy Birthday Kid Cudi 🌙
Humble Beginnings

Before becoming a fashion and music icon, Cudi worked at the Bape Store in NYC. He was working on his music and put out his breakthrough mixtape “A Kid Named Cudi” featuring ‘Day N Nite’. Kanye heard this and invited Cudi to come work with him.
Relationship with Ye

From that point on Ye and Cudi would become really close. Kanye took Cudi under his wing and they would bounce many ideas off each other. Ye asked Cudi to help work on his upcoming album and he delivered with ‘Heartless’ as one of his contributions.
808s & Heartbreak

Although Cudi only has 4 writing credits on this quintessential album, 808s doesn’t happen without Cudi. Ye has always credited those who inspired him & has gone on to say Cudi was his influence. They birthed a lane that would impact a generation of artists.
The Man On The Moon

This concept album brilliantly lays out a coming of age story broken down in 5 parts of a young man who is lost in the world but is trying to find himself. The vulnerable relatability of his journey is what resonated with millions of his fans.
Culture Shift

This was a transitional period in hip hop where more melodic influences were making way. Before this, rappers like 50 cent and Lil Wayne were the biggest names in the world. This would change to artists like Drake who was inspired by both Kid Cudi and Kanye.
Authenticity

Kid Cudi was not the first to speak on mental health in rap, (ie Scarface Joe Budden, etc) yet his delivery is what made so many listeners connect with him. Cudi always said his mission in life was to help people not feel alone.
