Thread time on the new easing of restrictions. It shouldn’t surprise you to hear that I’m concerned about easing of restrictions right now.

1. Hospital numbers are STILL very high. >500 in hospital and another >100 in ICU. It won’t take much to stress the system again. /1
2. The variant is a HUGE wildcard. We know it’s in the community and much more transmissible. We need more data on how prevalent it is and how quickly it’s spreading before easing. /2 https://twitter.com/gosiagasperophd/status/1354466960453505028
3. Daily case numbers and case positivity is still high! Remember when 400 cases a day felt like a lot? That was just in the late fall. We are just sensitized to the numbers and glad it’s not 1800 a day anymore. /3
4. Vaccine supply is uncertain. We are delayed in vaccinating the most vulnerable Albertans and are unsure if timeline targets will be met. /4
5. There has been little to nothing done to address indoor ventilation and aerosol spread of COVID-19. In fact, industry guidelines for personal services and restaurants haven’t been updated in months. /5
We are all tired and want this to be over. But we are closer than ever to getting numbers low enough to not risk having to close again in a couple months. The vaccine is coming. But we aren’t ready yet. There are still too many variables, the variant being the scariest. /6
