I haven’t discussed this publicly, but a lot of folks have been asking about my next book so I figured it was time for an update. The short answer is that I’m not sure. I caught Covid way back in March 2020 and have been sick for almost a year now. #LongCovid #POTS #MECF 1/11
I’m still writing but I’ve been battling fatigue so it’s been very slow going. I love my new project (a near-future thriller) and I’m about 3/4 of the way through my first draft so I’m getting there! While I'm here, I also want to talk a little about my Covid experience. 2/11
When I got sick, I didn’t think I had Covid at first. It was so mild, I thought I just had allergies. It wasn’t until the 3rd week that I was slammed by shortness of breath. That was back when they just told people to deal with it at home so that’s what I did. 3/11
I couldn’t speak complete sentences and my blood oxygen got scary low. That stage eventually passed but then began a round robin of new symptoms — rashes, food and chemical allergies, tachycardia when standing up, chest pain, swollen throat and ringing ears, etc. #MCAS 4/11
It wasn’t until the 5th month that it occurred to me that I might not just bounce back but I just kept saying “I’m not there yet but I’m getting better every day!” even as I got more and more sick. 5/11
As I’ve become bed-bound, I spent this year reassuring people that I’m getting better, partially because I needed to believe it and partially because a lifetime of “rub some grass on it” training taught me to always present a tough front. 6/11
Even though I’d been stuck in bed for months, unable to shower or make my own food, it took me until November to actually think of this as a disability. Hello deeply ingrained #Ableism! 7/11
There's a lot of good news here. By accepting that I may never just "get better" (and being lucky to have insurance), I’ve started rehabilitative therapy which is making a difference. I’m also lucky that writing is something I can do from bed! 9/11
I'm grateful that I found #DisabilityTwitter during this time. #DisabilityTwitterTaughtMe that I have a lot of deeply ingrained ableism and I'm grateful for the supportive community of amazing voices. It also taught me to just buy myself the damn shower chair and cane. 🤣10/11
So that's my latest update. Last thing I want to do is plug the #OwnVoices book Disability Visibility edited by @SFdirewolf. This book has filled me with hope and is such an essential collection of voices that everyone should read it! 11/11 https://disabilityvisibilityproject.com/book/
PS I'm happy to answer any #longcovid questions that people have.
