Does deplatforming work?
Does keeping extremism off mainstream social media further radicalize the smaller crowd on smaller platforms?
What other options are there?
We asked experts on extremism and communication.

@richardrogers studied extreme-right celebrities forced onto smaller platforms.
The data showed smaller revenue and smaller audiences, and a strange cooling of rhetoric that suggests money and attention were the oxygen for their fire. https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/full/10.1177/0267323120922066

@AmarAmarasingam has studied the belief systems and gathering places of extremists, from ISIS to Q believers, for years.
He says where Donald Trump winds up could decide whether a truly parallel "alt-tech" world takes form, bifurcating the Internet. https://warontherocks.com/2015/12/what-twitter-really-means-for-islamic-state-supporters/

@NafeesHamid studies the brains and beliefs of "devoted actors" — like Al Qaeda sympathizers.
He's found being online with peers who disapprove of violence causes those actors to moderate their behavior, and reactivates self-control in their brains.

@MarietjeSchaake pursued regulation of technology companies as a member of the European Parliament.
She said Europe learned lessons about extremism, tech, and democracy that America hasn't, in part b/c of our trust in markets and the first amendment. https://marietjeschaake.eu/en/letter-calling-for-parliamentary-inquiry-tech-companies-democracy

As always, I'm grateful to @NBCNewsNow and @AlisonMorrisNOW for giving me time to go deep on this sort of thing.
Also, big respect to colleagues like @oneunderscore__ and @BrandyZadrozny for their brave work covering this subject day in and day out. https://www.nbcnews.com/tech/tech-news/facebook-bans-qanon-across-its-platforms-n1242339

And thank you to @CosmicMak for bravely telling me and @CASottile his story in 2019. The son of Bosnian muslim immigrants, he fell into paradoxical, racist beliefs through social isolation and time with extremists online. He now studies radicalization to fight it in others.
