In 1975, the National Population Council recommended that women should have access to safe abortions based on their health & well-being. The NMA and the Society of Gynaecologists and Obstetricians of Nigeria were in full support. The conversation was killed a year later.
In 1981, SOGON initiated a bill on termination of pregnancy. It got to House of Reps & made it to the first reading but in the face of strong opposition from religious groups & the National Council of Women’s Societies, it was put to rest, again.
National Council of Women’s Societies worried that the passage of the bill would promote moral decadence. Instead, they suggested that we should all be more focused on family planning & prevention of pregnancy out of wedlock.

Internalized misogyny is a disease.
By July 1981, The National Assembly had received over 1,000 petitions from citizens & organizations. Every single one against the bill.

40 years later, we are still dealing with same. When will women have rights?
