Hi everyone, my name is Jackie Garcia ( @jaquelinmgarcia). I’m a third-year PhD student in the Biochemistry, Biophysics and Structural Biology program at WUSTL, and I’m a member of our SACNAS chapter.
I am from Aguascalientes, Mexico. When I was twelve, my family and I traded the highlands for The Great Plains and moved to Lincoln, NE where I spent most of my formative years and went to college.
As a first-generation college student, I attended @UNLincoln where I received a B.S. in Biochemistry and a B.A. in Spanish. GO BIG RED!
Now, I am a member of the wonderful @Guilak_Lab group where I spend my time working on understanding the biomechanics of cartilage in hopes of developing new therapeutics for osteoarthritis. My advice for new graduate students is to not be afraid to advocate for yourself and as @tomaslagunasjr said mentor>science. Finding a supporting mentor is so important for being successful (and most importantly happy) in grad school and beyond!
