Morgan Muir, one of the briefers for George W. Bush, returns as the daily briefer for President Biden, as DNI Haines seeks to demonstrate a return to apolitical intelligence.
Briefers typically change with new administrations. The intelligence community needed experienced analyst able to field questions from a new president with most foreign policy experience in decades.
Muir’s predecessor, Beth Sanner, had the toughest job in government briefing Trump. While all presidents are known to create bad days for senior intelligence officials, no presidential briefer has had bigger challenge than Ms. Sanner, according to intelligence officials.
Sanner remains for now the director for mission integration, but will yield that job to Muir in the weeks to come. Sanner’s tour at DNI will end by May. She could retire or could be offered another senior job.
Praise for Muir from many formers. One of Muir’s predecessors, @MichaelJMorell said he “is the best analyst in the intelligence community.”
Former C.I.A. director @johnbrennan said Muir would be “a terrific choice” to serve as Mr. Biden’s briefer, Mr. Brennan said. “Morgan Muir is an exceptionally talented and accomplished analyst,” he added. “One of the best ever at CIA.”
