ind*go tried to convince canadian publishers that they're driven by locality and curation.
1. lol
2. they are threatened by the resurgence of amazing indie bookstores that they were instrumental in nearly stamping out a few decades back. don't let them do it again!

i worked at this company for 7ish years and got a peek behind the curtain, then studied bookselling and reading cultures/spaces, & let me tell you: the chains are not your book-loving friends. they're venture capitalists who bought up smaller book retailers to create a monopoly.
these huge national chains force publishers to bend to them, demand steep discounts, and choke out local and regional specificity. they don't care and they don't curate. you've all seen you've got mail.
some of my favourite indies who DO engage with, support, & strengthen their communities include @massybooks, @IronDogBooks, @shelflifeyyc, @AnotherStoryTO, @ADFRNTBooklist, @typebooks, @flyingbooks_to, @LibrairieDandQ, @SaintHenriBooks. INDIES are the ones who deserve support!
