So I just read The Athletic’s article concerning KU basketball and the allegations of having a coach offer a recruit money over the phone. Here’s my thoughts in a quick thread:
I don’t think this changes too much to be honest. KU was already in pretty hot water with the NCAA and a punishment would likely be severe with the allegations already at hand regardless of the new stuff that has just come out
However, this could obviously make any punishment that comes that much worse now that it is officially being alleged that Kurtis Townsend offered money to a recruit.
Do I think Coach Townsend offered a recruit money over the phone? Yeah I do. That’s how college athletics works when you don’t allow your athletes to make money any other way and many of your athletes especially in major sports are coming from less fortunate situations.
At the end of the day, it all comes down to proof. If they can prove he offered money, Kansas is in big and deserved trouble based on NCAA rules. If they can’t prove it, KU will continue to deny it and they’ll probably be ok I think. These allegations are huge if true though.
