once you start seeing tech failures through the frame of a lack of consent, you can't stop seeing it everywhere
i'm talking privacy, i'm talking data sharing, i'm talking terms of service that are intentionally confusing and protracted to make consent impossible, i'm talking about robin hood forcing people to sell without their consent, i'm talking about "remind me later" vs "no" reminders
Things I'd likely focus on with my PhD:
• Consent in technology (cultural anthropology angle?)
• Objectivity (or lack thereof) in code and algorithms (philosophy of science angle?)
• Capitalist & Whiteness logics as foundational in tech (sociology + history + CRT angle?)

oh i'm not in a PhD program btw, i've never been able to get into one
honestly i just want to talk about how people's belief systems inform the technology they create & how that technology affects society!! (very solidly STS lol) and how it's not neutral at all

i particularly like the philosophy of science angle though, like *so many* men in tech are like "bUt cOde Is oBjEcTiVe" and... it really isn't. if we break down *why* it isn't, the convos about bias embedded in tech & how tech is political & can oppress becomes more clear
btw when i first applied to programs in winter 2015, the main thing i got was "this is way too specific, we don't have anyone to advise you"... bias in tech wasn't as big / well-discussed a topic as it was now. so it was so much harder to figure out who to work with :/
i mean now, there are *tons* of people who are working on this (well, ok it's still a somewhat small space), but the amount of publications, books, papers, articles, etc. on it in the last 5 years has been *tremendous*. i wish this was the case when i was applying to schools
yeah, i can apply again still (and i probably will!) but i fell off the earth for the last few years and burned bridges and don't have the rec letters or writing samples to apply still. and idk, just a little sad that ppl said this would never become a thing & rejected me for it
Just finished reading it, and I *absolutely* need to add this paper & its website from @im__jane et al. (2021) to this thread, on "Affirmative Consent." This paper is huge in establishing an explanatory and generative framework based in consent.

Here's the direct link to the paper, and this is *really* good. It's funny, I've actually recently been thinking a ton about designing a better social media alternative, and the generative / design portion of this is exactly what I've been looking for!!
