People often ask me the steps they need to take be "make it" this business and honestly, I don’t have the answers. For me it was hard work + a willingness to take a risk + good timing. And prayers. We all have access to those things.

But I do have some thoughts on comedy.
There are many different types of comedy. There are many ways to be funny. And there many genuinely funny people. I love making people laugh. I think we all do. We get a lot of joy & satisfaction when a joke hits. So thats really not enough for any one person to make a career.
I think people in comedy come from a great deal of pain. My humor evolved in my childhood when I had the motto: You either laugh or you cry. I chose to make my abused/depressed mom laugh. I made my bullies laugh. I chose to make myself laugh when what I wanted to do was disappear
I think at some point you have to ask yourself, do you want to be funny, or do you want to tell the truth. Again, many people are funny. Just like there are many people who can sing. The singers we remember are those that can make us feel something real. Same with comedy.
I want to be funny, but thats not my goal. My goal Is to talk about things that are important to me and part of a shared human experience. Maybe it’s bc my grandmother said things like “To whom much is given, much is required”. If there is no greater impact, what’s the point?
The funniest people I know, some of whom are tried and tested funniest people in the world, are fully realized human beings, w immense empathy & endless curiosity about everything. They have interests beyond entertainment and could honestly be successful at lots of other things.
