Last night, after experiencing a very unfortunate “micro-aggression” in a public setting, I took some time to reflect not only on what my team represents, but also who we represent. While I’m not new to this, it’s important to address at this moment in time. 🧵 1/5
First, I don’t like the term “micro-aggression.” There is nothing small about normalized behaviors that dismiss, discredit or minimize Black voices & those with intersectional realities. I’ve experienced this as a parent, educator, non-profit CEO and Mayoral candidate. 2/5
Life has taught me to absorb racialized aggressions. But last night, as I was speaking in a public platform—not about any agenda, but about my experience as a candidate of color—I was cut off by a woman of color in a manner so obvious, my team received text messages about it. 3/5
This is not just about the harm I experienced; I was speaking upon invitation. But as one running to ensure that Black Lives Matter not only when we’re dead, but also as we’re trying to be heard, I share this because I’m clear this, too, is why we’re ignored in policies. 4/5
As an organizer, activist and professional, my credentials don’t shield me from misogynoir. But in this moment of national awakening, we must not shrink from even the subconscious actions that divide us. Even when it makes us uncomfortable. 5/5
