THREAD: So many fans angry at the Cubs for being "cheap." I really just don't see it that way. I think it's a lot more complicated than people understand or want to recognize/acknowledge.
I think the revenue/debt issues for the Cubs are real – and understandable considering the impossible-to-foresee impact of zero gameday revenue for an entire season. As well as the fact that we don't at all know what ballpark attendance will look like this season.
People can argue that all franchises are in the same revenue boat. But have any other teams recently completed a massive renovation of a century-old ballpark & redevelopment of the area surrounding it? And to their credit, the Cubs did that with zero public funding.
On top of that, the Cubs also just launched a network, which surely came with additional start-up costs. I think they're in quite a unique situation compared to their franchise peers.
I really don't think the Rickettses just suddenly became skinflints for no reason. That makes no sense. And I'm not nearly as angry at Cubs ownership as many people seem to be. I think it's all unfortunate. My hope is that when attendance returns, the Cubs' spending will too.
The big question is: When will that be? And we just don't know.
