Nardini said repeatedly that she wanted to buy a team, that she'd been interested in buying a team, and then noted that people criticizing her made her change her mind on that. First of all, girlfriend, you are not cut out to be a team owner if valid criticism makes you buckle.
But second, as Defector says, this pulls the curtain back on her true intentions: lining her pockets & Barstool's. She doesn't care about growing the sport. She doesn't care that people have worked for years at the grassroots level to create sustainable growth for women's hockey.
And since her feelings got hurt, she and Portnoy have decided that they are going to not only take their toys and go home, but also kick down what others have built while they're at it. That's something we don't talk enough about re: how white supremacy manifests in sports.
So many white people, when they see BIPOC/people from marginalized communities get jobs or get traction or create change, get so angry. And often that anger manifests as wanting to tear down the very institutions they claim to be fans of rather than having to share.
And more of us white people who claim to be against this need to call this behavior out when we see it, and name it for what it is.
