"Normalcy bias" is a cognitive bias that encourages you to think that things are and will be the way they've always been.

Republicans are especially prey to this, as you can see from their suicidal/homicidal responses to Covid.

But there's a similar bias I want to talk about...
I'm not sure if it already has a name, but I think of it as "convenience bias," or perhaps "moral laziness."

Conservatives are able to customize their beliefs to maximize both personal convenience/pleasure and the appearance of being moral people.
For example, if a liberal warns them that their beloved gas-guzzling SUV is harming the environment, they just choose to believe it isn't, so keeping it is fine and good.

This is why Al Gore's climate change movie's title, An Inconvenient Truth, is so on point.
(One reason conservatives hate science is that it inconveniently demonstrates that their convenient beliefs aren't correct, no matter how morally relaxing they are.)
If their convenience bias goes far enough, they get to the point where they can just choose to believe Hillary Clinton eats babies because it's convenient to their otherwise inchoate hatred for her.

And if they don't like an election result, then, hey, it must've been stolen.
All of this goes back to America's oldest, deepest, and most dangerous conservative convenient belief, one the country was founded upon: that white people are superior and deserve privileges and respect denied to others.
