It dawns on me that for those of you on Rockies Twitter who are younger than me (read: all of you), this dawning era of "Rockies-apathy" is relatively new.
From 1998 (I was 17) - 2006, the Rockies never finished better than 4th in their division. 1/6
If you're a baseball fan like me, the result is a shift from being Rockies-centric in your fandom to picking favorite players all over the game. I lost track of the Rockies during that 9 year span. Literally, my fantasy baseball team became my favorite baseball team. 2/6
In a way, it made me a better baseball fan. It made me appreciate the greats of that era, like Bonds and Randy Johnson and how amazing Pujols was out of nowhere. I still loved my Rockies, but I didn't pay attention on a game-to-game basis. They faded into the background. 3/6
That's what made 2007's miracle run so amazing. It was like a long-dead part of my baseball soul started to stir during that September run and then exploded back into being when Holliday touched home plate. I was a fan of a *team* again. 4/6
If anyone wanted to call me a fair-weather fan for that, they'd be totally within their rights. It's true. You get so used to seeing your team finish 4th in the division & you've gotta find other ways to direct your fandom. I still wore Rockies gear, but it didn't mean much. 5/6
All that said, I fear that the Rockies are entering year 3 of what could be a similar decade-long stretch. It won't be fun. Rockies Twitter will dwindle & turn into more of a baseball-in-general twitter. We'll adapt because we're baseball fans. But the RT peak is likely over. 6/6
